Course objective and description

The Applied Epidemiology Training (AET) course aims to give the participants appropriate knowledge and skills and opportunities to develop the competencies required to carry out effective surveillance and outbreak response in their provinces.

This course is organized by the Communicable Disease Control Department of the Ministry of Health. It covers the following subjects: epidemiologic methods, biostatistics, public health surveillance, laboratory and biosafety, communication, information technology, and prevention and control of priority diseases. Special English language sessions will also be conducted in order to help participants to improve their English language proficiency.

This AET course is designed for 6 months, 2 months of which are didactics and the other 4 months are devoted to field work. The primary target participants for the entire 6 months’ course are the provincial RRT. For the 1st didactic workshop of the first cohort of the AET, 10 slots are given to the district RRT. In future, these slots will be opened to non RRT.

By the end of the course, the 6 months’ trainees are required to complete one surveillance project, write surveillance reports, and conduct at least one outbreak investigation.

The training cycle starts with a one-month didactic course, and then field work. The provincial trainees next have to come again for another two-week didactic session, and then go back to the field. They finally come again for a 3rd two-week didactic session. In between the didactic session, they are visited in their posts by their assigned field supervisors.
